Philosophy as Art

Philosophy can be looked at in the lens of two distinct realms of human thought and understanding, science and art.

In science, the scientist is in constant pursuit of truth. Of some secret of the universe so far unknown to him. Philosophy, gave birth to logic and reasoning which all science now employs. And so, like the scientist, the philosopher is part of an ongoing crop of individuals, pursuing the truth. This philosopher must keep up with the latest knowledge and discovery and understanding. Once that knowledge is categorised and a system standardised, it breaks off into its own discipline.

The other type of Philosopher is the artist. Where philosophy is an art much like literature. We still read Homer and Shakespeare as windows into the truths and thoughts of their time. In this way, we can still look on the old and ancient philosophers as the same, windows into the truths and context of their time.

It is in this way I study philosophy, just as one reads classic fiction. As a great work in which one may find some truth pertinent to their lives, or some understanding of how and why, men before us built the world the way they did.

I want to study philosophy for the artistic and beautiful nature of it. For the exploration and understanding of ideas about life which we have no meaningful way to test. In this way, we can continue to look back at the classics and apply them to the changing nature of our world.
